API vs. Local AI Calculator

Compare variable API usage with the complete fixed, initial, and operating cost of local inference. This model estimates cost crossing and payback points—not a technology recommendation.

A model is only as good as its assumptions.

Cost is only one dimension.

Model quality, latency, privacy, reliability, engineering capability, operational burden, and failure consequences can decide the choice before the cost lines cross.

! Model assumptions

  • The API and local candidate meet the same quality, latency, and reliability standard.
  • API cost prices the entered input and output tokens once. Include retries, tools, embeddings, caching, and fallbacks in your inputs where relevant.
  • Hardware and engineering setup are amortized over useful life for the monthly equivalent. Initial investment is also shown separately.
  • Redundancy applies to entered hardware and monthly compute. Enter electricity for the complete proposed fleet.
  • Three-year local cost includes engineering setup, recurring operations, and hardware replacement over the stated useful life.
  • Target utilization reports operational headroom; it does not pretend fixed cost disappears when equipment is idle.
  • This is a single-fleet model. Break-even is rejected when it requires more volume than the entered fleet can reliably serve.
  • If the current workload exceeds entered capacity, monthly, payback, and three-year comparisons are not decision-ready. Resize and reprice the fleet first.
  • Local does not automatically mean better. Privacy, control, migration, capacity, and operational risk remain part of the decision.
